| On day two, Dave had to work, so we headed north to see the North Shore and find the end of the road. Along the way we stopped to see the Kilauea Point lighthouse with it's remarkable lens. The original lighthouse is no longer in use and a much smaller and fully automated beacon has replaced it. From the Point we watched huge waves crash into a cliff and saw much native wildlife, including a Hawaiian Goose! As we continued to the end of the road we got to see amazing views of the ocean, which had some pretty big waves on it, limiting us and everyone else to the shore. We also found Wet Cave and Dry Cave, two remarkable caverns that were surely used by ancient Hawaiians. We took Dave's Jeep for a quick dip, something you can't do just anywhere! Then as we headed back to Dave's, we took a drive through some of the interior and discovered some neat valleys and waterfalls. It was a wonderful day that was capped off with a nice dinner out with Dave and some drinks on the beach listening to the waves crash. (Click any photo for a larger view) |
